Apple’s next serious competitor in the portable player market Sony’s Playstion Portable has decided to move into the movie download business. It is believed that Sony with its 20 million strong PSP user base would be an alternative to Apple’s iTunes for movie makers.This additional choice would be a relieve for movie makers as they would have greater free play (as competition can humble the leader) on setting the terms of agreement. They could also command a better payout from the movies Sony sells on their behalf.

Sony is to gatecrash the fledgling market in handheld devices to play downloaded video content early next year when it launches a service for the PlayStation Portable.

The decision, which could threaten Apple Computer?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s grip on the video download market, will allow PSP owners to download a film from the internet to a PC and then to transfer a single, legal version of the film to a Sony device.

Till date, it is yet to be known if Sony would allow users to download any format onto their PSP or would they enforce users to use their proprietary formats like iTunes. I do hope they allow a open format and allow us to have free play, as it would help me decide to purchase a PSP. But from track record that dream would be rather far fetch in becoming true
