Specials for fully-featured notebook PCs with $299 price tags are helping laptops stake out ground against the popular 10-inch Netbook segment in a tough economy. With bigger screens, optical drives, much more memory and some graphics horsepower to speak of, the $299 laptop is, believe it or not, giving 10-inch Netbooks a run for their money, reports Brooke Crothers for CNET. Penny-pinching consumers are noticing, too: Walmart’s $298 Compaq laptop was an instant Internet sensation, a
by Michael Edwards W hen doing the research for a article on new green products, I was unaware of many of the different ways to convert the energy of the sun into electrical power. I have written about solar cell or photovoltaic cell systems, so let’s look at another type of solar energy system. The Stirling engine goes back to the early 1800’s, when steam was the order of the day. Steam was used to power factories, trains, and many types of work that required lots of horsepower. However,
Could Apple be considering revising the Mac Mini by gutting what little horsepower it has???This rumor talks about a Mac Mini using the nVidia 9400M, and the Intel Atom 330 processor. This would surely destroy sales of the one affordable, sans-screen, desktop, that Apple offers.

As 2007 draws to a close, I look back at the past 365 days and sigh a fond farewell to a wonderful year. So, as a tribute to 2007, here is a countdown of 7 things I loved this year!

7) Facebook

Social networking at it’s best. Facebook was started in 2004, but this past year, its popularity has skyrocketed beyond all expectations. Alternatives to Friendster there are many, but there is only one that captures the imagination and can claim to be as successful as Facebook. 58 million — and counting — users can’t be wrong.

6) 5-megapixel Camera Phones

Nokia first launched theirs in Singapore this year. And Sony Ericsson and Samsung promptly followed suit with their own offerings. why, we’re talking about 5-magapixel camera phones, of course! Less desirable social implications aside, palm-sized mobile phones with more horsepower than first generation super-computers rock my world. With 10-megapixel camera phones expected next year, life is going to get a lot sharper.

5) Windows Vista

Ok, i jest.

Microsoft’s newest OS is making me weep in pain.

See next point.

4) Mac OS X Leopard

Cool just got cooler.

2007 saw Mac’s Leopard release, where they dumped 300+ new features into their OS, with ubercool stuff like Spaces and Time-Machine that are great to look at, though i’m not sure absolutely necessary. Seriously, how many of these features does the average person actually use at all?

But Mac continues to be ahead of it’s time, and i’m impressed.

3) Techpresso

Ok, shameless self-plugging. Hah.

Techpresso sees a mini-revival as we try to update more often so you get the latest news and reviews. And we’ve got a new look too! So let us know if you like what we’ve done so far.

2007 has been a good year for us, and we’re hoping 2008 will be even better!

2) Hellgate: London

London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down… Will you save the world?

London 2038 is in rambles, and it’s up to you to band together with other warriors to save our world. In the tradition of Diablo, Hellgate: London is the one game i can’t get enough of this year.

What’s the best way to relieve stress? Slash and burn your way past monsters from the abyss!

1) Apple iPhone

Everyone wants an iPhone, it seems. When it was launched earlier in the US this year, thousands queued overnight for it. And then more than a few sets were sold off the internet. It’s not even launched in Singapore yet, but i’ve seen a few tech junkies showing it off on our shores already. Sources say you can get the hacked (read: illegal) version of the iPhone at Sim Lim or Lucky Plaza. The police caught wind of the news too, i suppose, because they raided these outlets. Hah.

And it’s not even supported by our SIM cards yet!

Kudos to Apple. This is marketing and branding at its very best. The phone is far from perfect, but the throngs don’t seem to mind.
Incredible.

2007 has been a lot of fun. What got you excited?
