Joost the long awaited video streaming site that somehow didnt manage to make it has decided to make a switch in strategy. They will be coming out of the portal market and will be going into the white label space.

I think this is a better move then trying to acquire content from the networks, after all Joost has a product that allows people to stream video across sites but lack the content. Why not just provide the platform and leave the content to others. Look at Google, they fulfil a need to organize and sort information (content). So this might be a better move for Joost in the long run. I hope they will provide affordable pricing plans for 2nd tier webmasters to employ their streaming technology.

MS Office 12 will have a new file format. It would be using the xml file format to save the documents created by Office. The formats would be as follows docx, .xlsx and .pptx. Microsoft is referring to the family of new formats as “Microsoft Office Open XML Formats. These formats would be licensed under a royalty free license (current Office 2003 file formats) and users using older version may download upgrades to help read the new formats.

Microsoft would be still support the current 2003 format and allow users to opt out of the new open xml formats. This would provide users with a choice and at least some sort of backward compatibility support. But still users are expected to experience some pain associated with the upgrade. After all this is a major change in file formats. It seems Microsoft is betting alot on XML technology to help bring itself ahead or maintain it’s market lead.

Microsoft continues to slowly trickle out bits of information about its Office 12 suite. On Thursday the company will announce that it plans to make XML-based file formats the default in the version of Office due to ship in the latter half of 2006.Microsoft is introducing the new formats as part of Office 12, officials said, and will share more details about them at next week’s Tech Ed 2005 conference in Orlando, Fla.
